The newly opened Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair of Psychiatry. The Chair will provide academic leadership for the department of Psychiatry, expand and build collaborative relationships, and grow innovative programs. The successful Department Chair candidate will have a substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine, education, and research; be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; be qualified for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor; and be eligible for a license in the state of Michigan.
WMed, an innovative, community-based medical school is supported primarily by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, student tuition, and endowment income. The new medical school is a collaboration involving Western Michigan University, a top 100 national public doctoral university in the U.S., and 2 award-winning teaching hospitals, nationally recognized for innovation and quality. WMed is one of the few U.S. medical schools in several decades to be built entirely from the ground up. The inaugural class of 54 students will be graduating this summer 2018! The medical school has more than 200 residents and fellows in 8 residency and 2 fellowship programs. Over 100 employed faculty and more than 200 community physicians are involved in medical school teaching and research programs. Opened in June 2014, WMed’s new $68 million, 350,000 square foot educational building includes a state-of-the-art 24,000 square foot Simulation Center to promote SBL curriculum.
The Department of Psychiatry at WMed has a strong team in place with opportunity for further growth. Faculty specialize in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Consultation Psychiatry, and supports an ACGME accredited residency program for general psychiatry that matches 6 residents per year. The Department is responsible for an adult/geriatric/adolescent inpatient unit, an Adolescent Partial Program, and ECT services. The catchment area is Southwest Michigan which includes a population of 1 million people. Opportunities in the department continue to grow, including an eight-bed dedicated Psychiatry Emergency Department that was opened in 2017. The Kalamazoo Collaborative Care Project is also being developed to help primary care physicians provide quality care for patients suffering from depression, also offering a unique training experience in integrative care.
Kalamazoo is known for its community focus and emphasis on access to quality education at all levels. This metro area of over 325,000 people has something to offer everyone! Monthly art hops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, weekly festivals, craft breweries and wineries give this college town an exciting energy. Historic architecture juxtaposed with modern concepts preserve charm and authenticity while fostering innovation. Strong public school systems and a variety of private school options are available; a nationally renowned program, the Kalamazoo Promise, is available in which graduates of public schools receive free tuition to attend public and private colleges in the state. The city is conveniently located in close proximity to the gorgeous beaches of Lake Michigan, multiple ski resorts, and a quick train ride away from Chicago and Detroit.
