The University of Vermont (UVM) Larner College of Medicine (Larner College) and UVM Health Network invite applications and nominations for the position of Chair/Health Care Service Leader (“Chair”) of the Department of Psychiatry. This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished psychiatrist to lead the clinical, educational, and research programs of this vital department in a dynamic academic medical setting. As the only Chair of Psychiatry in the state, this person will have a unique responsibility and authority as a mental health leader.
Located in Burlington, Vermont, the UVM campus sits between the shores of Lake Champlain and the slopes of the Green Mountains. Larner College of Medicine has 830 full-time faculty and 432 staff. In FY2021, grants and contracts totaling $99.56 million supported faculty research efforts. The Chair will have strong support from the Dean and President of the UMVHN Medical Group (“President”, who also serves as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs) to ensure that the Department operates as a highly dynamic and forward-thinking unit. This recruitment is essential to the continued growth and success of Larner College and UVMHN and to position the Department of Psychiatry to address the grand challenges in the field.
The Department has a strong track record of producing compassionate physicians capable of delivering the highest-quality psychiatric care to patients in a variety of settings and is known for promoting lifelong learning in the context of a rapidly changing healthcare environment. The Chair of Psychiatry will provide broad leadership and administrative oversight of the Department’s highly specialized clinical and patient care services across the UVM Health Network, as well as its educational programs and research initiatives. The Chair will lead and develop the Department in alignment with the College’s and UVMHN’s strategic priorities and build on the historic strengths of the Department, while simultaneously implementing a new vision for the future of psychiatry at UVM. The incoming Chair will have the singular opportunity to provide collaborative and empathetic leadership to the Department’s accomplished and dedicated faculty and nurture the next generation of faculty by attracting, recruiting, and retaining top talent in the field of psychiatry. The Chair will oversee partnerships across clinical programs and within the community and will be charged with continuing the services offered for the critical and evolving needs, pre- and post-pandemic. The incoming Chair must be an optimistic and persuasive leader and bring an astute political savvy to engage with state leaders to create and move innovative legislation to improve mental health care in Vermont. The Chair will be able to express the value proposition for adequate care for inpatient and outpatient infrastructure across the health care network.
The successful candidate will be deeply committed to education, clinical service, and research and will bring experience in leadership and collaboration, strategic planning and implementation, and financial and resource management. This Chair will be an advocate for the Department, a leader, and a collaborator across the broader community. The ideal candidate should be a seasoned clinician, teacher, and administrator and bring a track record of tangible effort and success towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a passion for supporting the training of the next generation of researchers and psychiatrists.
