Overview
While working in an acute care environment, this position prepares prescribed solutions, administers anesthetic following specified methods and procedures, and informs physician of patient's condition during anesthesia. Performs pre- and post-anesthesia patient visits and documents anesthesia notes on patient records. This position provides care in accordance with organizational policies and standards of professional nursing practice, utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under his/her direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data, plan, provide, and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs. Reviews patient history and physical with patient/family and assures completion within appropriate timeframe. Reviews available information obtained by other health care team members. Reviews diagnostics and laboratory data and reports abnormal results to the physician(s) and other appropriate caregivers. Completes assessment and reassessments according to patient need and as outlined in policy.
This position is responsible for administering anesthesia to patients undergoing various procedures under the supervision of the attending physician. Ensures patients' safety by closely monitoring anesthetized and sedated patients, while also successfully de-sensitizing said patients from pain during their procedure.
Evaluates patients to minimize risk of adverse reactions to anesthesia. Closely monitors patient and documents vital status properly and completely on the medical record. Recognizes threatening or adverse patient reactions and applies corrective procedures, including informing the attending physician and resuscitating patient if necessary. Reacts properly during a life-threatening emergency to administer anesthesia in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
Communicates effectively with all staff involved with patients' procedure. Takes appropriate precautions to mitigate risk of infection to other patients and to colleagues. Performs checks on equipment, and accounts for proper tools and supplies prior to engaging in patient care.
Selects, orders, obtains, and administers analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services. Performs all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation. Facilitates emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
Initiates and administers post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system. Initiates and administers respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post anesthesia period. Provides post anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care.
Provides care based on the best evidence available, and may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participates in unit or facility shared leadership. Interacts and participates in the education, role development, and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families and visitors. Promotes/supports growth of others by acting as a preceptor or mentor when appropriate.
Contributes to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care. Actively participates in the improvement of national nursing quality indicators and outcomes. Such activities may include participating in professional organizations.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess knowledge of clinical care and patient treatment as normally obtained through the completion of master's degree in nursing. Must have completed a graduate program approved by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
Must be approved to practice as a Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetist (NBCRNA).
Must possess a valid current or temporary Alaska RN license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Doctorate degree preferred.
Experience working in an acute care setting within the past 12 months as a CRNA preferred.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
