Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) An opportunity exists for a full-time Director in the Pain Management Center at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. The duties are as follows, but not limited to: Develop policies and guidelines related to the practice of Pain Medicine and the administration of Pain Medicine throughout JBVAMC and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCS,) where applicable. Collaborates with the facility VVC Manager to administer Tele-Pain services for JBVAMC, the Clinical Resource Hub (CRC) and VISN 1 Oversees the administration of pain medicine and opioid safety review board electronic consultation services, overseeing facility VACO pain metrics. Facilitates weekly, interdisciplinary pain conferences. Assumes the Chair position of the JBVAMC Pain Management Committee and Opioid Safety Review Board as well as a member of the VISN 12 pain committee. Coordinates with the Anesthesiology Service Chief to ensure that equipment and supplies that are necessary for the efficient operation of the Comprehensive Pain Management Center are acquired and maintained per JBVAMC standards and protocols. Serves as the direct supervisor for Pain Medicine staff physicians (for their pain management practice,) staff nurse practitioners and staff physician assistants. Serves as co-supervisor for adjunct specialties based in the Comprehensive Pain Management Center (psychology, pharmacy, etc.) with germane clinical service chiefs. Completes performance evaluations of subordinate staff per JBVAMC standards and policies. Conducts professional practice evaluations with providers to assess their performance as it pertains to the practice of pain medicine, identify when performance does not meet expectations, and initiate appropriate action to improve performance. Collaborates with the Service Chief to develop yearly Pain Medicine Section budget projections. Participates in JBVAMC programs for continuing education, including BLS, ACLS and required TMS training. Generates written responses to pain management and opioid safety-related, veteran complaints, Congressional and White House inquiries per VHA protocols and acts as an advocate for Pain Management concerns. Provides direct supervision of University of Illinois at Chicago Pain Medicine Fellows, Anesthesiology Residents and Medical Students. Performs interventional pain medicine procedures as part of a balanced, data-driven, multi-disciplinary treatment plan, in accordance to current licensing and standards of care. Provides electronic consultation services as part of the VISN 12 Pain Medicine program. Performs pain management comprehensive assessments and develops treatment plans for complex acute and chronic pain patients. Manages opioid medications and performs opioid tapers and detoxification when necessary. Complies with current VA/DOD Long-term Opioid Therapy Guidelines, VISN 12 and VACO policies. Acts as a referral consultant for difficult pain patients upon clinical service request. Treats inpatients and outpatients with chronic and acute pain. Develops therapeutic care plans that are intended to achieve defined outcomes that improve the patient's quality of life. Works as part of an interdisciplinary team of pain management provider's. Initiates, modifies or discontinues medication therapies and serves as a consultant for intensive medication therapy management services. Orders, performs, reviews and analyzes appropriate laboratory tests, other diagnostic studies and registries necessary to monitor and support medication therapy. Follows up with patients regarding laboratory or other diagnostic test results to discuss care plans, changes to therapy and additional monitoring or testing requirements. Evaluates and reports adverse outcomes via JBVAMC standard reporting processes. Documents all pain management activities, including therapeutic changes and recommendations, in progress notes and completes encounters per JBVAMC and VHA standards to ensure workload capture.
