join a multi-faceted team of psychiatrists, therapists and behavioral specialists focusing on patients with mental health and chemical dependency issues. We offer adults and adolescents both outpatient and inpatient care at specialized facilities located in southwest Virginia. Carilion Clinic facilities are comprised of 61 adult beds (across two facilities) and 16 adolescent beds. We are developing new ways to understand and treat addictive disorders as we seamlessly blend treatment, research, and education using public and private support networks and intensive outpatient programs.
Our department has an organized office-based opioid treatment program OBOT involves receiving medication to stabilize addictive urges as well as participating in organized group therapy with others. We are engaged in adapting a form of experiential, practical therapy called START-NOW to assist with the recovery of substance users. As we adapt and customize the therapy, we not only treat our patients, but we develop new and better ways of doing so. Other innovations in treatment include the utilization of peer recovery specialists, and of technology and innovative techniques including how people envision, in association with Dr. Warren Bickel’s research at VTCRI. Both inpatient and outpatient services closely collaborate with pain medicine.
Our faculty includes psychiatrists who are board-certified in both addiction psychiatry and the new specialty of addiction medicine.
